Man Ray became a photographer in order to reproduce his paintings. In his own eyes he always remained a painter. He never succeeded in reconciling himself to the fact that he was more admired as a photographer.

His photographs bear witness to an entire epoch. His paintings have only occasionally become a part of what defines their time.
