Perhaps one could say that Man Ray compensated for his lack of a consistent style with personal charisma.

Exiled in Hollywood, May Ray decided to create the definitive photographic self-portrait. He took a close-up of his face with his gaze focused right into the lens. He added two lines that intersect and create a kind of crosshairs aimed at a point between the eyes. He then copied the negative with maximum contrast through rice paper. The resulting image works like a stamp; it can be printed in any manner, on any material, in any size – the result is always correct and the gaze of the artist remains forever focused.
